The gear shaper, sometimes called hobbing machine by gear-tool is a machine tool operating by mortizing. In this type of machine, the movement of generation corresponds to the engagement of the wheel similar to the tool with the gear to be trimmed. The rotation direction and the rapport of angular speed of the tool and the workpiece to be machined are combined. The general functioning and mechanism of a machine tool like the knife trimmer are primarily based on the movements over the axes X (radial movement of the ladle car), C (movement of generation of the tool), D (movement of generation of the workpiece) and L (the tool traverse length). There are several methods of knife trimming. First, we may state the one that uses the conventional method of penetration: the radial advance with movement of generation. Another method, the radial advance without movement of generation is particularly recommended in order to avoid the friction of the tool against the workpiece to be trimmed. The radial advance without movement of generation also allows realizing profiles that are not possible to trim by generation and significantly reduce penetration time. The third method of knife trimming is the spiral penetration with constant radial advance. Here, the chip volume tends to increase as the tool penetrates. Finally, spiral penetration with decreasing radial advance is characterized by an almost constant volume of chips, because, as the penetration goes on its speed decreases.
