Drilling means the set of machining methods consisting of drilling a workpiece. The drilling operation may allow a crossing hole from side to side or a blind hole (only one side of the workpiece, without totally crossing it). The drilling may be cylindrical, recessed, stepped, conical, or countersunk. When the diameter of the hole is less than 5 mm, the term used is micro-drilling. While the holes having a diameter greater than 20 mm are considered as macro-machining. Theoretically, drilling is a roughing operation. Therefore, it must be associated with a boring work permitting to reach an accurate diametrical dimension. But the latest drills are designed to reach higher levels of accuracy, without necessarily having to go through boring. The drilling category includes various types of machine tools that can be purchased on the second-hand market. Their quality depends on the level of checking undergone. RDMO workshops offer high guarantees at this level. Drills like those produced by the companies Ixion and TBT are known for their drilling ability, their power of training, their drilling depth, their center height and the dimensions of the clamping plate. In most machines of this type, the cutting fluid is driven into the inside of the tool, while the set fluid/chip gets out through its longitudinal flute. The pointer serves to accurately mark the location of a point on which will be made the drilling and the reaming. Hauser is well-known for the quality of its pointers. Aciera, Alzmetall, BSI, Chomienne, Cincinnati, ERLO, GSP, Hauser, Juroca, Posalux, Precis, and Promac are among the major manufacturers of drills. The drill may be column (for accurate machining drilling), multiple spindle (a fixed drill equipped with multiple drill chucks) or even radial. The radial drill is equipped with a spindle mounted on a sliding carriage along the length of an arm able to rotate around the axis of the column. Oerlikon is one of the leading manufacturers of radial drills. Finally, the thread cutter, which can be found in GB Tronic, Microtap, and Precis, enables a threaded hole after a drilling operation.
